Sana mzungu ei siis varsinaisesti sisällä negatiivisia sävyjä. Olemme miettineet, että se kuitenkin jossain suhteissa vertautunee suomenkielen neekeri-sanaan. Joitakin vuosikymmeniä sitten neekeri oli ”neutraali” yleistermi mustaihoisesta, mutta nykyään sanan käyttämistä täytyy varoa ainakin julkisesti ellei halua leimautua rasistiksi. Mzungu-sanan neutraalius perustunee täälläkin lähinnä siihen, että etnistä alkuperää kuvaavien termien poliittinen korrektius ei ole vielä samanlainen puheenaihe kuin Suomessa, missä etnisten ominaisuuksien julkituomista vältellään. Suomessa olisi nykyään kai jo tavatonta, että lapsilauma juoksisi afrikkalaistaustaisen ihmisen perässä huutamassa ”mustaihoinen, mustaihoinen”.
